How's about this filibusterer?
When I got the email, I didn't really know what to make of it. Keith Boykin for president? Okay, sure. The two we got running now SUCK. Why not Keith? At least he's friendly, well-spoken and worked out.
Then I read on. He's poised to be a contestant? member? actor? for a reality show called American Candidate. The email asked us to show up at the New York LGBT Community Center so that we could support him. Just show up, and then leave. That's all. Now that's my kind of favor!
So I did. I showed up, hugged and shook Keith's hand, and, after trading jokes with the irrespresible Bernie Tarver, I made my retreat. It was an interesting scene. Folks I hadn't seen for months (years!) were there. Black folks of all ages and classes gathering to support Mr. Boykin. I passed a few guys I dated, and shook their hands like I was a candidate running for office. "Thank you for the rotten dating experience, you fucking asshole, but vote for me in November, okay," wouldn't have been appropriate to say to at least three of the guys I saw.
It should be interesting to see what happens with Keith, and how many people show up vs. the number of people who actually vote, Bernie offered. This what he said on Keith's website. "Now if any New Yorkers would like to get involved in "real" political activity, please become a member of the Out People of Color Political Action Club, the first political club by, for and about LGBT People of Color in the nation, and the only such in NYC. OutPOCPAC has been around since 2001, made endorsements in city-wide elections, and this year will hold a training program for people interested in either running for office or working on a real campaign. Visit www.outpocpac.org to find out how to get involved. Let's not let our political activity be limited to a reality tv show."
I was like, yo, this is tv, Bernie, and that's how it is. People suck like lemons when it comes to political activity. Most will limit their political activity to a tv show. It's a fact.
We are both a little scared.
Good luck, Keith!

London may be close to approving first GLBT museum
by Ben Townley
Gay.com U.K.
Gay rights campaigner Peter Tatchell outlined his plans for the U.K.'s first lesbian and gay museum last week, an institution which would display the London LGBT community's "hidden history."
"London's lesbian and gay community has a fascinating hidden history spanning more than four centuries. The museum could display everything from 18th-century "molly house" artifacts, to badges and placards from the campaign to repeal Section 28," he said Monday.
"It has the potential to become an international attraction, bringing in researchers and tourists from all over Britain and the world, enhancing London's status as the world's leading queer city and contributing tourism earnings to the pink and London economies."
Tatchell proposed that the museum be based in the former Bow Street Police Station, where Oscar Wilde was originally incarcerated.
The museum was suggested earlier this year by Green Party leader and mayoral candidate Darren Johnson and adopted by all the other major candidates.
While not a candidate in London's upcoming mayoral election, Tatchell is a key politician. He recently threw his support to the Green Party, helping it draw up a gay manifesto for London, European and local elections, which take place across the country June 10.
Thanks Steven. It was great to see you. You helped make the event a huge success!
