Call for Submissions for FIERCE: A Genealogy of Black LGBT Organizations 1970-present (tentative title)
The first undertaking of its kind, this historic book will explore the history of black lesbian, gay, bisexual, same gender-loving, queer, in the life, and transgender groups, gatherings, and organizations over the last 34 years. The voices of those members of American society oftentimes silenced in national debate and academic discourse will share their stories, thoughts, and lessons learned while creating a social justice movement based upon race, gender, sexual orientation, and class.
The book will be edited by Steven G. Fullwood, author, co-editor of Think Again, and project director for the Black Gay and Lesbian Archive, Kevin McGruder, former executive director of Gay Men of African Descent, Inc., Herukhuti, M.Ed., M.A., author, sexologist, and organizational development consultant, and Mattie Richardson writer, activist, former Associate Publisher of Kitchen Table: Women of Color Press and PhD candidate in African Diaspora Studies at the University of California, Berkeley .
We are seeking submissions—scholarly articles, first-person narratives, participant reflections/memoirs, interviews, poetry, and photography—by scholars, researchers, journalists, photojournalists, and most especially by or about people who have been key leaders or members of a black lgbt/sgl/q organization and organizing. We consider a wide range of groups as contributing to resistance struggles and we therefore encourage submissions regarding a variety of formal and informal ongoing meetings including, but not limited to: Transgender/ Genderqueer/ Transsexual organizations, femme/butch groups, artists groups, student organizations, writers groups, support groups, spiritual fellowship groups, Lesbian health organizations, HIV/AIDS organizations, performance collectives, social gatherings, club producers, drag troupes, ballroom houses, travel excursion groups, annual pride organizations, and retreats.
For the purposes of this edition, we are defining black lgbt/sgl/q organizations by the following criteria:
1. Started or in operation 1970-2004
2. Formal or informal ongoing meeting/gathering
3. Organizational name and identity
4. Mission statement or articulated purpose
5. Organizational structure (does not have to be hierarchal)
6. Majority of its membership/constituents/customers are Black
7. Majority of its membership/constituents/customers are LGBT/SGL/Q or its focus/mission is LGBT/SGL/Q
8. Majority of its leadership/owners are Black LGBT/SGL/Q folks
9. Non-profit, for profit, or informal
Submission Guidelines: scholarly articles (20 pages max.), first person narratives and interviews (5 pages max.), poetry (2 pages. max.), and photography (5 photographs per photographer). Documents should be double-spaced, 12 pt., Times New Roman font. Photographs should be in jpg., gif., or pdf.
