BOOK SIGNING/READING
RedBone Press is celebrating the release of its three newest titles—love conjure/blues by Sharon Bridgforth, and nothin’ ugly fly and last rights by Marvin K. White—with a reading/signing by both authors. The event will be at 7 p.m. Saturday Dec. 11, 2004 at Nubian Heritage Bookstore, 2037 Fifth Ave. (at 126th Street), New York, NY 10035. 212-427-8999.
This event is co-sponsored by Gay Men of African Descent, People of Color in Crisis, Other Countries and Nubian Heritage Bookstore.
love conjure/blues considers a range of possibilities of gender expression and sexuality within a southern/rural/Black working class context. “The experience of love conjure/blues—the convergence of spiritual worlds and the embodiment of those worlds through reading—is the act of ‘making Holy,’” says Dr. Joni Jones, associate director of the Center for African & African American Studies at the University
of Texas at Austin.
“Wise and wry, Marvin K. White’s nothin’ ugly fly is a pleasure and a treasure. There are spare poems of concentrated emotion and intensity. There are swirling rococo pieces with all the creeping vines, veils and frou frou appropriate to nightclub divas. Most of all, nothin’ ugly fly is a lovingly honest rendering of family, faith and the falling and rising of the body black,” says Jaime Cortez, editor of Virgins, Guerrillas & Locas.
“White’s prose [in last rights] often leaps from the page in red-hot explosions, but it also exhibits heartrending tenderness … It is an unforgettable combination,” says Venus Magazine.
Each title is $14.00 and is available at Nubian Heritage Bookstore.
