Black Men: There’s a seminar in New York City that I would personally like to recommend to you.
Last year, I participated in a research study called Our Bodies, Our Wisdom facilitated by Herukhuti. I was one of a group of black men who met for several months to discuss our lives in the context of issues such as masculinity, desire, spirituality, health and our childhoods. The structure of the study allowed for critical dialogue among group members, as well as contributed to the overall well-being group dynamics. This is not a “sit-down-and-tell-your-story” kind of seminar. It’s highly interactive where participants engage in ritual, yoga and exercises designed for self-reflection. I enjoyed my experience tremendously. The other brothers were thoughtful and wonderful to get to know. In their presence I was able to unearth long buried memories helped me gain some clarity about issues around intimacy and self-reliance, mainly about why I have such a hard time with each concept.
If you know anything about me, the last thing I want to be doing on a Friday night (or any other night, come to think of it) is to travel to Brooklyn when I could be at home chilling. I am even less likely to join a group of any sort. However this rare experience proved to be significantly ground-breaking and life-affirming. The men in the group helped shaped the study and thus were engaged in the co-creation and co-facilitation of issues and topics we wanted to discuss and engage. Ever been to a group where you left feeling worse than when you arrived? This is not that type of gathering.
This is an opportunity for you (regardless of sexual identity) to attend Our Bodies, Our Wisdom as a seminar (rather than as a research study). Think about it. I highly recommend the seminar. Herukhuti’s a great facilitator and simply a good spirit to know.
